An Analysis of the Practical and Symbolic Attributes of Wangfujing Space Culture

Abstract: Wangfujing Stretin Beijing isanold street with a historyofover 7OO years andacommercial stree with a historyofover1OO years.Asaconsumer space,Wangfujing Stret has developed from Dong'an Marketto theprosperous Wangfujing inthel92Osand193Os,andthen tothecapitalcommercial streetofnew China.Itsdevelopmentprocessis the resultof thecomprehensive developmentof practicalandsymbolicatributes.In this processtheprosperous marketstate producedcorrspondingsymbolicatributesanddominatedthespatialcultureandsignificanceof Wangfujing.Since the1990s, the commercial developmentandaseriesof spatialchanges inthe Wangfujing areahaveshownadivision betwensymbolic and practical atributes,andhavebecomea majorprincipleofspatial organization.According to Sharon Zukin'stheoryof symbolic economy, this should be the direction of future Wangfujing spatial culture.
