Abstract:This paper takes Plato’s tripartite theory of knowledge(justified true belief)and the technical features of Generative Artificial Inteligence (GenAl)as the foundational framework for a multidimensional explorationin the knowledge production paradigm in GenAl-driven translation studies. The study reveals that GenAl’s content generation mechanisms challenge the traditional base of knowledge: The concepts of truth and belief, once grounded in human logic, are redefined as statistically optimal solutions; the opaque of algorithmic“black box” denies the necessity for human justification; the unsupervised learning mechanisms challenge human-centric assumptions, shifting the focus of knowledge production in translation studies from human act to collaborative efforts between human and machine. The new landscape of knowledge production in translation studies, shaped by GenAl,is giving rise to a novel epistemology that necessitates a departure from anthropocentric perspectives. While recognizing GenAl's epistemic agency in generating knowledge, it remains crucial to uphold the fundamental role of humans in sense-making and value construction in translation studies.
