A Comparative Study of Stance Markers in Chinese and EnglishMaster'sTheses

Abstract: This study employs the theory of interpersonal communication in academic discourse to analyze stance markers in the master's theses of Chinese and English native students. The findings reveal both similarities and differences in their usage. While both groups utiize stance markers extensively, significant diferences in frequency reflect distinct rhetorical traditions and academic norms shaped by cultural backgrounds. These differences underscore the value of diverse variants within multilingual academic English. The study ofers recommendations for academic writing instruction,including promoting respect for diferent English variants,enhancing linguistic diversity among Chinese students, and balancing objectivity with authorial identity in academic writing.
