Exploring the Relationship between Second Language Growth Mindset and Willingness to Communicate: The Mediating Roles of Second Language Buoyancy and Foreign Language Enjoyment

Abstract: Based on a survey of 258 high school students,this study employs descriptive statistics, correlational analysis,and structural equation modeling to examine the impact of second language (L2)growth mindset on second language willingness to communicate (L2WTC). It also explores the independent and chain mediating roles of second language(L2) buoyancy and foreign language (FL)enjoyment. The results indicate that: L2 growth mindset does not directly predict L2WTC; L2 buoyancy serves as a positive mediator in the relationship between L2 growth mindset and L2WTC, however,the mediating role of FL enjoyment in this pathway is not significant; both L2 buoyancy and FL enjoyment function as chain mediators in the pathway from L2 growth mindset to L2WTC.The findings provide insights for teachers to develop students’ growth language mindset,enhance academic buoyancy and positive emotional experiences in foreign language teaching, and thus promote students’ participation in classroom communicative activities..
