Abstract: Status nouns (SNs) refer to a class of abstract nouns that represent the degree and type of alignment between propositions and the objective world. They play a crucial role in academic knowledge construction. This study investigates the characteristic discourse acts and knowledge construction functions of SNs in academic discourse, compares their meanings and functions across research articles from 23 disciplinary fields, and explores the diferences in the ways academic knowledge is built. The results show that SNs mainly express meanings of evidence, idea, manner, argument and possibility and serve functions of providing basis, proposing arguments, making predictions and assessing claims. Cross-disciplinary comparative analyses reveal that soft disciplines, particularly soft-pure ones, make greater use of SNs. Disciplinary groups exhibit varying preferences in the distribution of status meanings, with soft-pure disciplines significantly tending to elaborate on, argue or critique ideas and claims. The study offers important implications for the design of academic English writing courses and the teaching material development.
