Nature， Human Affairs and Innovation： The Impact of Malaria on the Formation of the Chieftain System from the Perspective of the Unified Yuan Dynasty State

Abstract：Afterthe Yuan Dynastyunified the northandthe south，itreplacedJimi（羈縻）approachtowardsmulti-ethnic areathathad beeninplacesincetheTangandSong Dynasties withthe ChieftainSystem，achievingahistoric ransformation，systematiceshaping andoverallreconstructionoftheethnicgoverancesystem.Infact，te establishmentoftheChieftain Systemwasalsorelatedtothe complex"malaria"environmentinthelocalareas.Terefore，theYuanDynastyreliedonlocaloficials togoveandestablishedthe Chieftain System inethnic areasofprovincessuchasSichuan，YunnanandHubei.Itcanbesaidthat theemergenceanddevelopment of theCieftainSystemwas teresultoftheYuanDynasty'sproactiveadaptationtothe"malaria"conditionsatebeginingofitsrule. Itsignificantlyenhancedtheabilityofteunidstatetogove malara-strickenareasandlidtefoundationfortefurterdevelopment of the Chieftain System in the Ming and QingDynasties.
