Mesotes and Zhongyong: The Practice and Enlightenment of “Propriety" in Ideological and Political Education

Abstract:Thispaperexaminesthesimilaritisanddiferencesbetweenthethicalconceptsof“Mesotes-Zongyong(Theoctrine oftheMan)”and“Propriety”,andexploresthepracticalsignificanceof“Propriety”inideologicalandpolticaleducationIntersof similarities,Aristotle’s“Mesotes”,Cofucius’s“Zhongong”anddamSith's“Propriety”alleflecttheieaof"Shangzong(aluing moderation)”,pursuinganimpartialbalance,andemphasizingflexibitythroughtheprincipleof“Shizhong(timelyadaptation)”tocircumstances.Regardingdiferences,“Mesotes”prioritizessientificrationaityandfreechoice,“Zhongyong”focusesonoralatioality andritual-los,hile“Proprietyintegatesatioalitdssiblityglighigeotioalonndublicfr logicaladliautiooeptof“Protsstueatelicalveltpsald novativethinking;atoalveliiatscdotilaresabilit;tacticalvel ioral“Propriety”through the dual adjustment of subjective and objective factors.
