AFeature-checking Analysis of the Adverbial Effect in the Middle Construction WEI Chaofeng

Abstract：Genericity-checking is the key toexplaining the adverbial efect in the middle construction.Comparing empirical evidenceand folowing thePhase Theory，ithasbeen found thatthegenericity featurefallson the T head；since Tin middleshas tocheck its interpretablefeature iF[IMPERr]Soas tobe transferredto thesemantic interfaceandget itsgenericreading，English middles，duetoitsunvaluedT，requiresvaluation throughagoalwithin thephase of T，i.e.theadverb.On theotherhand，modals，negationand focal elements have theircorrsponding interpretable featurealreadyvalued whileenteringthe syntax，and thereforenoadverb isneeded for valuation.To conclude，thefeature-checking approach providesasyntacticanalysis of theadverbial effect in middlesand its compensatory relation to modals，and asaresult ofabandoning pure semantic representation，embraces the minimalist research tradition.
