Abstract:InTheCritiqueofPoetry,ZhongRong states thatTaoYuanming'spoetry"derives from Ying Qu".Since the SongDynasty, scholars have debated thisassertion withoutreaching adefinitive conclusion. The key to resolving this issue lies inrestoring Zhong Rong'spoetic stylisticand school perspectivesand his logical reasoning for evaluating Tao Yuanming'spoetry.AcomparisonbetweentheprefaceofTheCritiqueofPoetryand Xiao Zixian's LiteraryDiscourseintheHistoryoftheSouthern QiDynastyrevealsthatduringtheLiangDynastyintheSouthern Dynasties, three poetic styles prevailed:one imitatingthegentleand intricate styleofXieLingyunand Xie Tiao, one focusing on referential matters and allusion usage akin to Fu Xian,Ying Qu ,Yan Yanzhi, and Xie Zhuang, and one emulating Bao Zhao's intense and ornate style.Similar to Ying Qu′s poetry,Tao Yuanming's works containabundant referential contentand alusions. From this perspective,Zhong Rong's tracing of Tao's poetic origin to Ying Qu is entirely reasonable.
