Abstract: [Purposes] Based on the surface circulation patterns,this study identified the severe pollution events caused by direct dust transport in 5 Ningxia cities during spring seasons from 2O18 to 2022. We systematically analyzed the concentration characteristics,transportation pathways,and potential source regions of PM10 pollutants.The findings aim to enhance the early-warning capabilities for dust-induced air polution in Ningxia and support air quality management strategies.[Methods] Based on the HYSPLIT backward trajectory model,the PSCF latent source contribution factor analysis and the CWT concentration weight trajectory analysis were used to determine the distribution of latent source regions and the relative contribution levels from diferent source regions.[Findings] Zhongwei City had the highest number of sand and dust pollution days and heavy pollution days,while Shizuishan City had the highestproportion of heavy polution days.In spring,three main transportation pathways entered Ningxia, namely the westward pathway from southeastern Xinjiang,the northward reverse "S"-shaped pathway from central Mongolia,and the northwestern pathway from northwest Xinjiang and western Mongolia.However, differences existed among cities. The potential source regions of high PM10 mass concentrations in 5 cities were mostly located in the Alxa Desert,and the contributions of dust source regions to the hourly PM10 mass concentration varied among cities.[Conclusions] It is essential not only to implement preemptive prevention and control of sand and dust polution from desert sources but also to enhance the regulation and management of PM10 anthropogenic sources.
