Reliability and validity of the Self?Awareness of Falls in Elderly Scale in elderly inpatients

Abstract  Objective：To examine the reliability and validity of the Self?Awareness of Falls in Elderly Scale in hospitalized elderly patients.Methods：270 elderly patients in a tertiary grade A hospital in Hubei province were investigated by general data scale and Self?Awareness of Falls in Elderly Scale.Results：Item analysis showed that there were statistically significant differences between the 21 items of the Self?Awareness of Falls in Elderly Scale in the high score group and the low score group（P<0.01），and the CR value were 4.682?21.020（P<0.01）.The correlation coefficients between the four dimensions and the total score were 0.666?0.856（P<0.01），and the correlation coefficients between the 21 items and the total score were 0.400?0.781（P<0.01）.Content validity test showed that I?CVI ranged from 0.875 to 1.000，AND S?CVI/Ave was 0.988.Four common factors，which were awareness of physical functions，awareness of activity safety and environment，awareness of cognitive behavioral and awareness of medication，were extracted using exploratory factor analysis，which could explain 69.254% cumulative variance contribution rate. Reliability test showed that the overall Cronbach's α coefficients was 0.923，and the half?fold reliability was 0.812.Conclusion：The Self?Awareness of Falls in Elderly Scale has good reliability and validity，and it can be used as a reliable tool for assessment of fall alertness in hospitalized elderly patients in China.
