AbstractIron-boron aloycoatings were preparedby electro-sparkdeposition usingFe-Ballyaselectrode material inboth argonandargon-fre atmospheresrespectively.Themirostructureandpropertisofthetwocoatingswerecomparativelyinvestigated via metallographicicroscopyscaingelectronmicroscopy(SEM),andphaseanalysis.Keyfidingssho:thecoatingingofree atmosphere exhibitedoughersufaces,andthecoating inargonatmosphereshoweddenser microstructuresandsmothersufaces,yet developedsurfacecracks.BothcoatingsprimarilycontainedFeBphase,along withsmallamountsofmartensitephaseandFe3Bphase. ArgonatmospherecansuppresthedecompositionofFe3Bphase,makingthecoatingpreparedinargonatmospherecontainmoreFe3B phase.The maximummicrohardnessofcoatingspreparedinargonandargon-freeatmospheresare1146HVand138HVrespectively indicatingbothatingangiicantlymproveteardessofsubsrateaterialuttdepositiotmoshressallifuc on coating hardness.
