A Multi-Case Study on the Digital Transformation of the Manufacturing Innovation Ecosystem

Abstract: The digital transformation of the manufacturing sector is currently experiencing a deceleration in its evolution and a systemic shift in competitive dynamics.Establishing a digital innovation eco system represents a crucial strategy for the manufacturing industry to navigate the challnges of transformation and cultivate a robust digital competitive landscape. Consequently,the digital transformation of the manufacturing industry's innovation ecosystem has emerged as a pivotal area of focus. To investigate the underlying logic governing this transformation,we conducted a systematic analysis utilizing grounded theory and multiple case studies to explore the multi-factor coupling pathways involved in this process.This study elucidates the intricate connotations associated with the digital transformation of the manufacturing industry’s innovation ecosystem from a systemic perspective. Our findings indicate that,once digital technologies are integrated into this ecosystem,key stakeholders, resources,and structural attributes significantly affect performance through processes of knowledge restructuring. Furthermore,it was observed that these characteristics positively correlate with transformational performance while knowledge restructuring acts as an intermediary linking them to performance outcomes;additionally,environmental factors play a moderating role in this relationship. The conclusions drawn from our research illuminate and validate the “black box" mechanism by which characteristics of the manufacturing industry's innovation ecosystem impact transformational performance-thereby enriching scholarly discourse on industrial digitization—and offering theoretical insights for fostering and developing effective digital innovation ecosystems within this sector.
