Abstract:Catchphrasescirculate widely within society, serving as tools for individuals to vent emotions and expresssentiments.Thisstudy, groundedinMichelMafsoli'stheoryofNeotribalism, examines layer-specific catchphrases within the graduate student community to explore how their linguistic practices construct temporally bounded,affect-driven communities.Utilizing participant observation and in-depth interviews, theresearch revealsthat graduatestudentcatchphrasesexhibitfourkeycharacteristics:homophonic puns, metonymy, metaphor, and recombination. These catchphrases foster group cohesion through aquadruple mechanism of“pain humoraffectiveresonance—identityconfirmation—meme propagation.”Whileconventional understandingoften portrays graduate studentsusingcatchphrases to express negative emotions”,conveying feelingsofanxietyand helplessness, this studyreveals that these expressons function not merely as outlets for emotional catharsis under academic pressure.Critically, they constitute symbolic strategies through which graduate students actively construct identity, resist discursive hegemony, and achieve tribal cohesion characterized by fluid walls.
