Abstract: In this study,the plant composition,diversity and root characteristics of rat mounds in plateau pikas and mole moles in Henan County,Qinghai Province were investigated by sample method at diferent restoration stages and the intemal correlation between soil physical and mechanical properties and vegetation coverage and root characteristics was established to reveal the effects of soil physical and mechanical properties of rat mound patchs on vegetation diversity and plant roots. So as to provide a theoretical basis for optimizing the vegetation restoration technology of degraded patches in alpine meadows. The results showed that there were significant differences in species composition and community characteristics between the two types of rat mound patches, and their surface α diversity index increased with vegetation restoration. The vegetation diversity was in a sig nificant growth stage after the coverage was greater than 50% ( P<0.05) ,and the physical and mechanical properties of the soil were significantly improved.Principal component analysis (PCA)showed that the differences in soil properties in rat mound patches mainly depended on vegetation coverage,soil bulk density and total porosity. The mixed-effct model confirmed that the root system contributed the most to the diversity,and the structural equation model confirmed that the physical and mechanical properties of the rat mound soil had a directimpact on the diversity and root characteristics. The combination of natural restoration and manual intervention to implement the revegetation of rat mound patches is the best model.
