"Victory at Your Feet": A Study of the Red Army's Capability for Mountainous Night Marches
Yang Dong
Abstract:Marching capability serves as a critical indicator of a military force's combat efectiveness, and the Red Army's marching prowess was both distinctive and unparalled. Rooted in the CPC's pragmatic acknowledgmentof the disparity between its own forces and the enemy's superior strength, this capability was forged through deliberate adaptation to mountainous night combat conditions. By integrating rapid yet enduring marching speeds into guerillastrategies and tactics—bolstered by acute reconnaissance, meticulous political mobilization, resilient logistical systems, and rigorous organizational discipline—the Red Army cultivated a“specialized expertise.”This expertise exemplified the CPC's military distinctiveness within the unique political-military dynamics of modern China. Despite attempts bythe KMT troops to replicate the Red Army's marching training methods, their oucomes remained lackluster.Upholding the conviction that“victory lies at the feet"and“triumph is born from marching,"the CPC sustained this formidable marching capability, cementing it asa cornerstone in the ultimate success of the revolution.
