Liminality and the Ethnicity Writing in Gem of the Ocean
LYU Chunmei' WANG Yinuo2
Abstract: Ethnicity is one of the major themes in the works of African American playwright August Wilson. In Gem of the Ocean, he applies the technique of liminal representation to depict the threestage process of the evolution of African American ethnicity: portraying liminal character to visualize the ethnicity crisis; constructing liminal space to provide a field for the transition; and designing a liminal ritual plot to promote the incorporation. Through the combination of liminality and ethnicity, Wilson emphasizes the significance of African history and traditional culture for the persistence of ethnicity. He expresses his strong concern for the survival of African American community, and meanwhile makes an appeal for the inheritance of African ethnicity.
