Effect of cold oral stimulation on thirst in ICU patients：a Meta-analysis

AbstractObjective：To evaluate the effect of cold oral stimulation on thirst in ICU patients.Methods：Randomized controlled trials on the effect of cold oral stimulation on thirst in ICU patients were retrieved from the Cochrane Library，PubMed，EMbase，Web of Science，CNKI，WanFang Database，VIP，and CBM.The search period was from the establishment of the database to October 1，2022.After literature screening，information extraction and quality evaluation by two researchers，Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 and STATA software.Results：A total of 8 articles were included.The results of Meta-analysis showed that cold oral stimulation could reduce thirst intensity（MD＝－2.12，95％CI －3.12-－1.11，P＜0.000 01），relieve thirst pain（MD＝－2.15，95％CI －3.85-－0.46，P＝0.01）and improve oral mucosal moisture in ICU patients（MD＝－0.78，95％CI －1.37-－0.20，P＝0.009）.Conclusion：Existing evidence shows that cold oral stimulation can effectively reduce the thirst intensity of ICU patients，relieve the thirst pain of ICU patients，improve the degree of oral mucosa moisture of ICU patients，and improve the comfort of patients during ICU treatment.
