AbstractShort-chain fattyacids (SCFAs)aremetabolitesof intestinal microbiota produced from dietary fiber fermentation.Theyregulate theintestinal motilitythrough multiplemechansmsincluding modulationof gastrointestinal hormones,enteric nervoussystem,smoothmusclecelsandinterstitialcellsofCajal(ICC).AlerationsinSCFAsoceation have beenobserved in patients with intestinal motilitydisorders.Therapeutic interventions such as SCFAssupplementation, high-fiberdiets,probiotics/prebiotics,and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT)havedemonstratedeficacyinimproving clinicalsymptoms.This articlereviewed research progressontheroles and mechanisms ofSCFAs in intestinalmotility.
