Rising sea levels have caused Panama to evacuate people living on one of itsislands2. The people of the small Gardi Sugdub island off Panama’s Caribbeancoast3 are going to live on the mainland4. However, the Panamanian government5said some people are not leaving their home. They will stay until the last minute.

The government said Gardi Sugdub is a sign of things to come. More peopleon the islands are under threat6 from being sunk. A new study said Panama wouldlose 2.01% of its territory7 near the coast to rising sea levels. About 38,000people will need to leave at a cost of about $1.2 billion.

Gardi Sugdub has been home to the Guna people for generations. The smallisland is just 366 metres long and 137 metres wide, but was home to 300 families. They worked on fishing and tourism8 to make a living.

One of them, Nadin Morales, 24, said, “We’re a little sad... but the sea issinking the island little by little.”She added, “I’ve seen that climate change hashad a big impact9.... The water comes to a level it didn’t before.”Ms. Moraleshopes her community will develop well in its new location.
