Abstract Interdisciplinary research has emerged as a prominent research method for solving complex problems.This paperprovdes acomprehensiveanalysisofadvancements ininterdisciplinaryresearch,highlightingexisting challenges and suggesting future research directions,making ita valuable resourceforsubsequent studies.Firstofall,this paper proposesa definition of interdisciplinary research that includes both interdisciplinary activities and their outcomes.It then systematicallreviewscurrent researchthrough fivekeythemes:definitionalcognition,influencingfactors,evolutionary processes,identification,measurement,andevaluation.Theanalysis reveals threemajorchallengesfacing interdisciplinaryresearch:alackofunityatthecognitivelevel,the necesityofachieving deeper knowledge mining inidentification and measurement studies,and the needforan improved evaluation systemand knowledgeorganization.In this regard,futureresearchshouldconcentrateonseveralkeyareas:understanding themechanismsofinterdisciplinaryactivities,developing identification and measurement methods for knowledge units,anddesigning multidimensional evaluation criteria whileoptimizing knowledge organization.Finally,this paper constructs aroadmap for interdisciplinary research at the level of knowledge units,aiming to provide new perspectives for future research.
