Abstract: Public buildings are important components of energy conservation and emission reduction in the construction industry. As the city with the highest urbanization rate in China, Shanghai urgently needs to solve the carbon reduction problem in the field of public buildings. This article relies on the data from the Shanghai Statistical Yearbook and uses Kaya identity to determine five factors that affect carbon emissions: energy structure, building energy eficiency, reciprocal of economic density, economic development, and population size. Based on the LMDI decomposition model, the main influencing factors are quantitatively analyzed. The research results indicate that the development of the tertiary industry economy and population size are key factors driving the increase in carbon emissons from public buildings in Shanghai. Conversely, energy structure, reciprocal of economic density and building energy efficiency are key factors in suppressing carbon emissions.By elucidating the historical evolution trend of carbon emissions from public buildings in Shanghai and exploring the potential for energy conservation and emission reduction in public buildings, this study proposes suggestions for energy conservation and emission reduction in public buildings.
