Analytical method of YASA axial flux machine considering axial stator offset

Abstract :In yokeless and segmented armature (YASA) axial flux permanent magnet machines,the stator may be axially shifted due to the manufacture and assembly,leading to vibration noise of the machine. An analytical method considering the axial stator ofset was proposed to calculate the no-load magnetic field air gap for the YASA machine. The YASA machine was transformed into a series of 2-D models with varying radii by employing a quasi-3-D approach. Subsequently, the accurate subdomain method was used to divide the YASA machine into five subdomains in Cartesian coordinates,which can effectively consider the effects of stator axial offset and stator slot depth on the air-gap magnetic field distribution.
Harmonic coefficients of each subdomain are solved based on boundary conditions,yielding the distribution of no-load air gap magnetic flux density,back electromotive force (back-EMF),and cogging torque. The calculation results were compared with finite element analysis(FEA),which shows a good agreement between the analytical method and FEA.Furthermore,it can be concluded that the variation of back-EMF and cogging torque can be almost neglected when the axial stator offset is less than 25% . Finally,the YASA machine was fabricated and experiments were carried out to further validate efectiveness of the proposed analytical method.
