A study on the viscous characteristics of granular fault gouge under low and high slip rates

Abstract:The viscous characteristics of granular fault gouge significantly impact thedynamic mechanical behaviorof faults, yetthe problemof determiningthe viscosityofthese interlayersatdiferent slipvelocities remainsunresolved.Thisarticle presents theoreticalresearch onthis isue.The Maxwellrelaxationmodel was employed to study theevolutionofforce chains in granular fault gouge during slow shearing of granular gouge,andthe dependence offorce chain length on shearstrain rate, efectiveextensionspeedofshear bands,andstrengthofthegranular medium was derived.Therelaxationtimeof theshear band in granular fault gouge,the expresson forthe viscositycoefficient of the granular medium,and the conditions for the transformation of solid-liquid mechanical behaviorof the granular medium were established.The validityof this model was verifiedthroughcomparison with existing experimentaldata.Forhigh-speed fault slip shear,themotionof thegranular mediumexhibits turbulent characteristics.Statistical physics wasused todescribethe interactionbetween granular particles in granularfault gouge,anditwasfoundthattheviscositycoeficientisinverselyproportional totheshearrateathighsliprates. Theresearch results have fundamental significance for understanding theviscous and other physico-mechanical properties of granular gouge in faults.
