Abstract:Objective To explore the efects of diffrent modifiers onphysical parameters and failure characteristics of sandstone-like materials.Methods By using river sand,lime,gypsum and water as base materials,uniaxial compression tests were performed on specimens incorporating paraffin,glycerin or silicone oil.The influence of modifiers on densityuniaxial compressive strength and failure modes were analyzed.Results With the increaseof modifier content,the density increased while compressive strength decreased overall Glycerol exhibited the lowest compressive strength among modifiers and provided superior water retention,folowed by silicone oil,and parafin. Under uniaxial compression,specimens with parafin or silicone oil developed primary and secondary tensile cracks without shear ones,with crack counts varying by modifier content. Glycerin-enhanced specimens displayed increased plasticity. 3% glycerol caused tensile cracks,while 5% and 7% glycerol induced both tensile and shear cracks.Conclusion Considering water retention and failure characteristics,glycerin is recommended as an optimal modifier for sandstone-like materials.
