During the Spring and Autumn Period, there was a great musician Yu Boya(俞伯牙). He was good at playing the Guqin(古琴).
One day during a boat trip, Yu Boya took out his Guqin and played. A young woodsman stood on the riverbank enjoying the music. His name was Zhong Ziqi(鐘子期).
Yu Boya invited Zhong Ziqi to the boat and played the Guqin for him. He played the Guqin to express his love for the mountains.
Wonderful! It seems that the mountains are just before my eyes!
Oh! Really?
Beautiful! It is like hundreds of boats sailing down big rivers!
Boya was surprised. He then played another tune.
Now it is like the spring rain dripping on lotus leaves; now like the autumn breeze singing in the moonlight; now like the strong wind...
Oh! My goodness! Whenever I play a different tune, you can tell what I am thinking! You really understand my music.
So they became best friends. And they made plans to meet again in the same place next year.
The following year, Boya arrived on time. But he found that Ziqi had died of an illness. This made Boya very sad. He took out the Guqin and played the music of the High Mountains and Flowing Water. He said, “My best friend is dead. No one understands my music now.” Then he broke the Guqin and never played it again.
Boya and Ziqi shared the same interest(興趣愛(ài)好相同). They understood each other well. How good it is to have a friend like this!
