The longest-living freshwater fish
最長(zhǎng)壽淡水魚(yú)
Scientists recently confirmed that the majority of thebuffalo fish swimming around this remote desert lake ineastern Arizona are older than a hundred. The discoverybuilds on other recent research that has upended[顛倒] beliefsabout the buffalo fish, a genus of five freshwater fish speciesnative to North America. Just a few years ago, scientiststhought that these fish, which come in an array of colorsfrom chestnut brown to bluish, only lived into their mid-20s.However, a study revealed that bigmouth buffalo fish couldlive up to 112 years old, making it the oldest known freshwaterteleost, a group of about 12,000 ray-finned fish species foundworldwide. Recently researchers announced the discoveryof a 127-year-old bigmouth buffalo fish in Saskatchewan,Canada. Buffalo fish continue to live their best lives intotheir upper 80s and 90s, with better stress response andimmune function relative to younger individuals. Buffalo fish can go decades between successful reproductions[ 繁殖; 復(fù)制]because they require very specific environmentalconditions—most of which are still unknown—toprocreate. That’s why the fish evolved to live so long.
