Zhuangzi Dreaming of Being a Butterfly莊周夢(mèng)蝶

“莊周夢(mèng)蝶”出自《莊子·齊物論》：“昔者莊周夢(mèng)為胡蝶，栩栩然胡蝶也?！焙笥谩扒f周夢(mèng)蝶”比喻人生虛幻無(wú)常。

One night， Zhuangzi went to sleep and dreamed that he was abutterfly， 1）fluttering around and enjoying the experience of being a2）carefree butterfly. He felt completely 3）immersed in the butterfly’sperspective and was unaware of being Zhuangzi. Upon waking up，Zhuangzi was puzzled. He 4）pondered， “Was I Zhuangzi dreaming ofbeing a butterfly， or am I now a butterfly dreaming of being Zhuangzi？”He didn’t know which one was real.

Zhuangzi used this dream to remind people that there must be arelative difference between oneself and others， between dreaming andwakefulness， and between all other things. However， these boundarieswere not absolute and could be broken. Things were in constanttransformation and circulation， which he called “the transformation ofthings”.
